07.09s Ley of the Land

Post by Spellbinder »

Following his conversation with Raven and Oberon, Spellbinder will again take to the air. He will start an aerial reconnaissance of the city for his *sigh* sanitation project. He will be paying attention to traffic patterns, drainage, etc. and won't be paying much attention to who or what else might be in the air at the time. (Okay, yes, he's looking for likely places for supervillian hideouts, but he's not consciously aware that he's doing it.)

Rasanam was otherwise occupied when Spellbinder flew away from the festivities... but he was already in the air when Spellbinder flew from castle to city, and that route goes near enough to Ht'gon for a passing red-caped superhero to earn a share of Rasanam's curiosity.

Which is why Kevin will shortly find himself escorted by a raven and a dragon. "Hello! I haven't seen you around before. Interesting flight effect you've got, there."

The raven is, for the moment, silent.

"Oh, uh, hi! I wasn't expecting company up here. You haven't seen my around because I just got here today. I'm called Spellbinder. The flight? That's just a little something I made for myself. Part of the fun of being a superhero is being able to fly. Besides, it keeps me out of a lot of traffic. So, if it's not too rude to ask, who would you be?"

"Rasanam Wolfgrin, and this is Fjolnir."

"Hello," says the raven.

"I'd offer to shake your hand," Rasanam continues, "But that'd be a bit awkward here; my current flight method doesn't allow quite as much fine control. So, what brings a... 'superhero' to Amber? And, err, what does that term mean?"

"Rasanam? Well, you certainly don't look like the picture I was shown. Shapeshifting I assume. Innate, or spell? Either way, very well done."

"Nice to meet you too Fjolnir. A raven, but not Raven. How many talking ravens are there hereabouts?"

"What brings me here? It was a ship. Okay, seriously, when I left my home, long story but I guess we could all say that, I was told to seek out a 'pole of order' in reality. The description was vague at best. I think this is the place in question...or at least it's as close as one can get. So right now I'm learning my way around and getting to know people. You are on the list of people I should get to know by the way...but you probably knew that."

"Superhero? We're people of exceptional abilities who use our gifts to help others. Mostly we end up informally helping the police, but basically we do what we can to protect people who don't have our abilities. In my case, my magic is my exceptional ability. Back home magic is rare enough that some people don't really believe it exists."

"Sorcerous; until I got here, I did not know 'innate' was a thing. Odin seems to think that latter category is a function of Chaos, though I have not yet studied the matter sufficiently..."

"Four or five that I know of," answers Fjolnir, cutting in before Rasanam can digress too far into obscure magic theory, "Depending on whether or not you count The Raven - technically he's human? I think? Maybe?"

"Well, he certainly looked like a raven to me. I've heard that subject come up already, which is something considering how long I've been here. With a natural shapeshifter it's kinda tricky to say what they true form him. Maybe it's more about the mind or the spirit than the body. I really can't say right now."

"Back home we had a lot of types of shapeshifters, just not a lot of any given type. The fae who change don't cast spells to do it, but they don't need to because they are magic. There was debate over the weres, but I think they had to be magic. A disease really couldn't explain being bound by the phases of the moon or the weakness to silver. No debate about the mutants though. There's no magic in their transformations. Mutation could definitely be a function of Chaos though. Never really thought of it that way."

"Could be. Or it could be a form of local non-magical effect; from what I understand the big deal about Chaos-based innate shapeshifting is that it works anywhere." Rasanam will quite cheerfully go off on a tangent about different sorts of shapeshifting and the mechanics thereof, comparing (for example) what Spellbinder knows about were-creatures to the sort of were-creature Rasanam is familiar with from his (D&D-based) home shadow. This time, Fjolnir won't stop him.

Spellbinder will just as cheerfully join Rasanam on that tangent. I suspect this conversation will continue until something interrupts them, most likely nightfall, hungry or someone needing to come in for a landing because they are tired or his spells are running out.

The conversation continues for a fair amount of time before Rasanam holds up a hand, calling for a momentary stop.

"Trump call," he says, seeming to listen to something else for a moment.

"Ah. My wife reminds me that I should probably get back to the festivities before someone tries to take my absence as an insult." It's fairly clear that the last part of that is about half joke (since he hasn't been gone that long yet).

"I could have told you that," mutters Fjolnir.

"Then why didn't you?" asks Rasanam. "Anyway," he turns back to Spellbinder, "You're welcome to come with me. Or we can continue this conversation some other time?" ((There's a side implication here that Rasanam has actually missed, though: and that is that if Spellbinder stays away from the festivities, someone probably will interpret that as an insult.))
